Concerning the use of lye in soapmaking Dragonfly Soaps Responds:

Thanks for taking the time to write us. We are glad you like our soap and would be happy to answer your question about lye.

YES! Lye is used in the soapmaking process. Without lye you can not make soap. Lye is a base. Olive, palm, shea butter and coconut oils are acids. When you mix an acid and a base together it neutralizes and makes a new substance...soap. We have carefully calculated our formulas so that every lye molecule can combine with an oil molecule and allow extra oil molecules to be left over in the finished soap. This is called superfatting and here at Dragonfly Soaps we superfat at a high percentage. That is why our soap is so gentle and seems superior to other handcrafted soaps. It is also why our soap tends to be a slight bit softer than other soaps. We prefer gentle and softer to harsh and firmer. So to summarize, we use lye but all the lye gets used up in the chemical process and there are no free lye molecules left in the finished soap. I hope this answers your question.
