About Our Handmade Oatmeal Almond Scented Soap
This is truly one of our simplest soaps, lightly scented and chock full of the goodness of oatmeal. The nubby texture of the oats helps to slough away tired skin while the oils of olive, palm and coconut add a silken finish to this superfatted shea butter bar soap. Each pretty, handcut bar contains naturally occurring glycerin - celebrated for its emollient properties and its ability to make a very long-lasting bar soap. We package your Oatmeal Almond Soap very simply in our charming recycled paper label and we're doing our best to run the greenest possible soapmaking studio in Pennsylvania. Whoever said the simplest things in life are the best knew what he was talking about - in fact, we think he must have tried our Oatmeal Almond soap! Long before the advent of commercially-produced cosmetics, sensible women depended on what was at hand in their search for cleanliness and beauty. You're a farmer's wife, living in Pennsylvania in the early 19th century, and you and your sturdy husband grow acres and acres of oats. You can see the rippling, golden fields from your farm kitchen window. And you've noticed that whenever you work those sweet little oats into your breads, pastries and cookies, your hands come away from the task softened. You put that interesting fact away in your mind and the next time your hands get overly dry from hours spent hoeing weeds in the vegetable garden, you make up a little paste of oatmeal and fats to take off the roughened skin and reveal the fresh, healthy skin beneath. Very smart of you!

In fact, a version of a story just like this is told in the classic Hoosier novel, A Girl of the Limberlost by beloved American author, Gene Stratton Porter. In the book, Mrs. Comstock has worked her whole adult life on her farm beside a mysterious swamp in Illinois and sun and wind have made her skin as tough and wrinkled as a walnut shell. Mrs. Comstock suffers a sort of mid-life crisis and decides to give herself a new skin. She wraps herself up in an extremely strong paste of oatmeal and tansy and, after a few rather gripping days of looking like a lobster, her skin emerges totally fresh and new. Her own daughter doesn't even recognize her! Well, we certainly won't make any claims like this about our Oatmeal Almond scented soap, and we've taken a much milder approach than Mrs. Comstock, but it's a funny thing to keep in mind when you wash with oatmeal.
