Handcrafting this bar of soap really is like creating a gourmet recipe for you. Successful batches are dependent upon a bit of soapmakers' magic known as tracing. Trace is when a base and an acid get pulled into the chemical process called saponification which changes the chemical make-up of both the base and acids into a whole new finished product. What is special about the way Dragonfly Soaps soapmakers proceed from that point is that we superfat the mixture with shea butter. This means we add way more oils than bases, resulting in the extra-rich doses of botanical oils and fats that make our soaps so mild.

Tracing is a tricky, time-sensitive process. Just as the recipe starts to thicken to the consistency of a good white sauce, we must quickly add chosen scents and any nutrients like honey or superfatting oils and butters, exfolliants or clays. It takes skill to know just the right moment to add these special ingredients, before the mixture has thickened too much. But, even after all these careful steps, the recipe still hasn't become soap. It needs to rest for 24 hours in an insulated mold, then at least 3 weeks on the curing rack. All this work is certainly worth it, though, when the end result is as sensational as our Triple Chocolate Mint scented soap.

This bar soap gets its scrumptious name from the fact that the soap batch is split into portions of 1/3 and 2/3. 1/3 gets melted white chocolate and peppermint essential oil added to it. 2/3 get melted chocolate chips and chocolate fragrance added and this is split into two portions. One of those portions gets an additional dose of dark chocolate cocoa powder which makes it so rich and dark in color. The milk chocolate gets poured into the mold first, then the white, then the very dark...then all are swirled together! So if you look closely, you can see 3 colors.
